Experience
Sheriff Troy Heck's experience:
- Troy graduated from Bloomington Kennedy High School.
- Troy attended Normandale Community College and received a degree in Law Enforcement.
- Troy attended and completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS) program, Southern Police Institute Homicide Investigation course, and the Association of Minnesota Counties COHORT leadership seminar.
- Troy began his law enforcement career as a patrol deputy with the Benton County Sheriff's Office in 1994.
- Troy was assigned to the Central Minnesota Drug Task Force in 1998 where he was tasked with working with other investigators to fight drug crimes in the tri-county area.
- In 1999 Troy was promoted to Detective Investigator. As a Detective Investigator, Troy was assigned to investigate felony level crimes and crimes against children in Benton County.
- In 2003 Troy was assigned to the Stearns-Benton SERT team as one of the team's crisis negotiators.
- In 2004 Troy was selected as the Rice American Legion Officer of the Year.
- In 2005 Troy was promoted again to Detective Sergeant. In this position, Troy was charged with performing investigations and supervising the office's detectives and Drug Task Force investigators.
- In 2007 Troy was promoted to the position of Chief Deputy. As Chief Deputy, Troy was responsible for overseeing all operations in the sheriff's office.
- In 2013 Troy was selected as the Minnesota Sheriff's Association Supervisor of the Year.
- In 2015 Troy was sworn in as sheriff. Since becoming sheriff, Troy has led a talented staff who have assisted in instituting some key enhancements to the office. These include establishing a new mission statement and strategic plan; implementing programs to enhance our connection with youth such as the Police Activities League, Youth ATV and snowmobile instruction, and continued support of the DARE program; building a closer connection to the community through the use of social media; focusing on crime prevention in the community; and working closely with public safety partners to accomplish our mission of keeping Benton County safe.
